David L. Jones, Sr - Catherine Stanton

And now, David LeRoy Jones, Sr., my grandfather. He was born in Williamsburg, Ohio, December 23, 18S6. He passed away at the General Hospital, Algona, Iowa on Sunday, December 28, 1941 at the age of 85 years and 5 days. He had pneumonia."

David moved from Ohio to Illinois as a young man. He was united in marriage to Catherine Stanton of Utica, Illinois on March 17, 1881. Catherine was born January 18, 1864 and died June 9, 1899, at the age of 35. Catherine had been ill for two years, doctoring in Indianapolis, Indiana. See copy of her obituary. She left a poem for her husband and her children and sisters and brother as well as her parents and friends.

To this union, ten children were born.

He moved his family to Ellsworth, Iowa in 1916 after the death of his wife. Since then he has made his home in Iowa with occasional visits to Illinois. He moved to Luvern, Iowa in 1936 to live with his daughter, Emily Guy.

He was a farmer and titler and later a gardener.

His wife, Catherine Stanton, three infant sons, and two daughters preceded him in death. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

His wife, Catherine Stanton, was born and buried in Utica, LaSalle County, Illinois. Catherine has two sisters, Agnes Stanton Snell, Elizabeth Stanton Liles, and a brother, Timothy. See Stanton History.

Their children are Elizabeth Jones Waite, Joseph R., Emily Jones Guy, Nellie Jones Smith, Annie Jones Vessels, Catherine Jones Normandin, and twins, David and WIlliam, Thomas and Oscar. Thomas, Oscar and William died in infancy.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) Jones married Guy Waite. She was born August 22, 1882 and died May 1948. Guy Waite died August 14, 1947. They are buried in Deer Park Cemetery. Elizabeth was born in Deer Park Lake County. Their two children are Millie and Claude. Claud married Lucille(?) and had two sons, Wayne and Burton.

Aunt Lizzie and Uncle Guy lived in Ottawa, Illinois most of their life. He was a smallish, neat person and she always wore her hair in a bun. He was an engineer in Ottawa's Marble Factory and also taught school in Tonica, Illinois.

Joseph R. Jones married Edna Lourine Normandin. He was born November 4, 1888 in Utica, LaSalle County, Illinois and died July 22, 1964 in the Veteran's Hospital, Dwight, Illinois. Edna was born May 25, 1901 in Ellsworth, Hamilton County, Iowa, and died March 5, 1966 in Morris, Illinois of cancer. They were married October 11, 1919.

Uncle Joe and Aunt Edna had no children. She was a sister to Milton Normandin who married Uncle Joe's sister Catherine. Uncle Joe served in World War I, where he was gassed which affected his health the rest of his life. He was a member of VFW in Morris, Illinois. He was a small person with a great sense of humor, whereas she was rather robust. I enjoyed visiting them; they always called me "Binny" or "Bibian".

Emily Jane Jones married William Guy. She was born August 27, 1886, Deer Park Lake, Illinois, the second oldest. She died October 13, 1959. They had five children: David Roy, Mildred, Thelma, Melvin, Lyle and Donald. Donald died at three years..

David Roy, Roy as he was known, married Loretta and had ten children. Roy visited Dad and Mom regularly in later life. He died as a result of an auto accident. He was born February 20, 1904 in Streator, Illinois and died October 15, 1977 in Rochester, Minnesota.

Mildred, a very perky , and stylish lady, married Andrew Johnson, and they had a daughter, Helen. Mildred lived in a beautiful house and did interior design, drapes, etc. They are both dead and their daughter is married to a doctor and living in California.

Thelma married Keith Keipp and lives in Iowa, wintering in Texas. They have five children: Judith Ann, Debra Jill, Dan, Susan, and Kerry. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary recently.

No information on Melvin to date.

David's daughter, Nellie, born 1890 and died in 1921, married John Smith. He was born October 7, 1883 and died January 14, 1960. He is buried in the Riverview Cemetery, Algona, Iowa. They had five children: Raymond, Aaron, Kathryn, Bob and Fred. Kathryn, born May 28, 1911, married Albert Lau. She died December 29, 1978 and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Fort Dodge, Iowa. Fred, born October 28, 1915 in Jewell, Iowa, died December 9, 1977 in Humboldt, Iowa. He was interred in North Lawn Cemetery, Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Annie Mae, born in the year 1893, died in 1929 at the age of 36 years and 7 months. She was married to William McConnell Arthur Vessels. He was born October 14, 1882 and died January 23, 1955 in Sacramento, California. They had 7 children: Helen, Willis, Elmer, Jack, Merle, Delbert, and Ray. Elmer and Bernice live at 8021 Stevenson Bernice Avenue, Sacramento, California, 95828.

Catherine Mae, born January 25, 1894 at Deer Park Lake, Illinois, died April 26, 1960 in Colfax, Iowa. She married Milton Edward December 17, 1912 in Streator, LaSalle Co., Illinois. Milton (Peck) born September 26, 1890 at Ellsworth, Hamilton,Co., Iowa and died April 28, 1960 in Newton, Jasper Co., Iowa. They had a double funeral and are buried in the McKiever Cemetery, Colfax, Jasper Co., Iowa. They had five children: Lyle, Lillian, Hazel, Luverne, and Charles.

David LeRoy and William were born June 22, 1895 in Deer Park Township, Illinois. William did not survive and David LeRoy grew up to be my father.

David lost his mother when he was four years old. He spent most of his very young years with his Aunt Agnes Snell and Aunt Elizabeth Liles. His older sisters were responsible for the care and feeding of the family. His oldest sister was thirteen when he and his twin were born. David did field work from the time he was 10 years old for a John Sage. He spent his childhood in Illinois. He registered for the draft in Deer Park Township, June 6, 1917, his number was #12. He remained in Illinois until July 1917, then going to Jewell, Iowa to his sister. On August 27, 1917 he enlisted at Webster City, Iowa. He was assigned to C1. C, 2nd Infantry of Iowa. He was sent to Camp Cody, Deming, New Mexico. His identification number was 132, 125 M.G. Battalion, 34th Div. He was in training at Camp Cody until 1918. On the 25th of January he was honorably discharged as physically unfit. A few months later was reclassified as 1 A for special military duty. Major Philpot of Fort Dodge, Iowa and Captain Dunn were his commanding officers. His physical disability was due to a crippled left leg from Infantile Paralysis contracted when he was a boy.
